SPRING APPROACHES, INCH BY INCH

'INCHIES' - something I haven't tried before, so the Opus Gluei theme of 'Inchies' was quite a challenge for me.  First cut up some cream watercolour paper into tiny squares, OK.  Then draw or paint something on these little pieces, but what should I draw that will fit in that miniature space!

Inchies in Black and Cream - Jez

This is what I decided on.  I thought of arranging them in nice neat rows, but realised I'd never get everything straight, so random placing is what I ended up with and in fact I prefer this arrangement.  I enjoyed the challenge because it was so easy and relaxing to sit in a spare moment and draw one or two.  I'll definitely do more of these.

SPRING is the theme for the So Artful monthly challenge.  My offering is very simple, just love among the apple blossom.

Hubert is such a nice young man, shy and polite.  It's clear Arabella felt she had to provide a little encouragement by pretending to be snoozing, but by golly the top of that stone column must be killing her neck.

  1. Your inchies are very creative! Hard to believe they are a first attempt. Aren't they fun?

  2. Wow, you are new to inchies? Jez, I wish I'd been so inspired my first time making them. These are striking and I love the use of black on cream, your drawings POP beautifully. They are fun to experiment with and then collage or use on cards, ATCs, etc. I'm really happy you tried them out and then shared them with us at Opus Gluei. I hope you return for more challenges, I enjoyed seeing what you did with the inchies theme.

Your love amongst the apple blossoms made me chuckle, I love making up stories for some of my work too. I had participated in a postcard themed challenge and lost the mojo, but I enjoyed the idea of two sisters sharing experiences over time through their postcards. You make me want to pick it up again even for my own selfish reasons, ha ha. I think Arabella is a smart girl, even if she does have a stiff neck now. Go Hubert!

  3. I love your inchies Jez. I just rediscovered Jan Pieńkowski after searching for a book he illustrated that I read as a child (A Necklace of Raindrops) and the illustrations are of a silhouette style... your inchies make me think of his style as well. Gorgeous.

As always your little stories raise a chuckle. Especially with the big grin on Arabella's face :D

  8. Hi Jez...........love the black and white theme for your inchies. Makes me want to get my pens out and do a set using zentangles. Small is good I think. Thanks for joining in the inchie challenge - always good to try something a little different, and your tiny pictures are masterful.

  10. when I first heard of inchies I thought I was going to love them. I was deep into an ATC phase, and really enjoyed working small. I sat down, full of confidence that this would be my new favorite art form, and then OHMYGOD those are reallyreally small! I made a half dozen ugly inchies and felt my blood pressure rising and decided I am NOT an inchie person at all. It makes me admire yours even more!

  11. These are both lovely. Great, compellling images in the inchies, and the cherry blossom (or was it apple blossom) picture just made me smile. It's so great to see all the stuff you're doing, because you do so much, and in so many different mediums. Bravo!

  12. Jez your work is always inspiring. I love it as well as I love your thoughful comments whenever you visit my blog. Here and not only here but in Latin America as a whole, we - women - are still crawling when it comes to having our rights respected. In Brazil men still kill their women for so many reasons. (Domesic) violence prevails and there has been an increase on the rape cases. It is sad.Sometimes I think we will be the second sex forever as Simone de Beauvoir wrote.I see no solution and it is the 21st century.I thought after dictatorship, life would be different. But we are still easy preys. I hope my girls may have a fair existence as I hope women in the third world may be heard, seen and respected. I wonder how long invisibility will prevail.Have magical day my friend!
