I drew the sketch below this morning from a photograph I took many years ago on a holiday in Sussex. Dev and I were walking along the country lanes when we saw this yacht marooned in the middle of a field, well away from a river or the sea.

A4 drawing with Pitt Artists Pen - Jez |
I've never been successful at drawing boats in the past, so this was quite a challenge for me. I decided to be brave and paint it as well, though the line drawings are really my favourites.

Watercolour |
I was pleased with the result. The paper in the sketchbook is not good quality and of course it buckled - served me right for using that book. But I remembered a comment someone left on a previous post that ironing the back of thin paper when the painting is completely dry will flatten it. (I'm so sorry, I can't remember who, but thank you). I had to tear it out of the sketchbook, but it can be stuck back in. And the ironing tip worked.
The sketch was done for Lynn Cohens
Paper, Paint, Pencils & Pens blog, where lots of interesting work is posted several times a day by very talented artists - the current theme being 'Away from Home', but I am so pleased with it that I wanted to share it here, and hope you like it.

Beautiful Jez!
ReplyDeleteVery greatly done Jez! I love all kind of boats and I'm dreamin the old days when it was wonderful to wake up in boat cabin when the sun was raising on the sky.
ReplyDeleteWahoo you have really done one fine job on this Jez it is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI love both versions Jez.
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful, Jez. It's a very strong line drawing and looks fabulous! The painted version is lovely too :)

This is so nice. The pencil drawing looked already finished to me when I first saw it! Interesting the idea of ironing the back of the paper. Good to know! :)
ReplyDeleteWow Jez - you got all the proportions right, the lines straight where they should be, the curves. I bow down to your nautical skills!! Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful painting. Like the colors. If you like it. Come look at my artblog. http://jannys-art.blogspot.nl/
ReplyDeleteThis is magical Jez!Love the details, my friend.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! And I love both the black and white and the colored piece!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, and always very hard to sketch. There is a boat moored in a garden in a back lane near here, has been there for years, I always wonder why when I pass it! Valerie
ReplyDeleteA beautiful watercolour sketch Jez, and how lovely to create it from a old photograph which brings back memories of past holidays. You have a great eye for detail, the wisps of grass are expertly done.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a good drawing, Jez, so delicate and shows the boat and rigging so well. I also like it painted but I see what you mean about the line drawing.
ReplyDeleteI just love this Jez. Both versions. I also love the thought of stumbling upon it in a field far away from any water :)
ReplyDeleteI also like both versions, can't really choose which one I like best. Love the details in this ...
ReplyDeleteVery well done, Jez! I like both versions, too. I am always attracted to boats but afraid to draw or paint them. So many sticks and strings, LOL. A tip for flattening sketchbook pages without tearing them out - lightly dampen the back of the page with a soft brush and clean water, stick a piece of waxed paper there so the pages don't stick together, then close the book and stack some heavy books on top. It will flatten as it dries. Of course, you can't do it if you use both sides of the paper but if the paper is very thin you probably are working on only one side, anyway.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Jez. Very nice colors and nice memory.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful hez Both as a line drawing and as a watercolour and a do love the vibrancy of the colours.
ReplyDeleteLovely sketch and ditto painting. I find boats hard to draw/sketch too. Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteThat's a fantastic drawing and painting. I love both.
ReplyDeleteBoats are so hard to draw...you've done a brilliant job ;D
I bet that boat has a story to tell too.
I always have the problem of buckling paper so your tip has made me a happy bunny.
Have a wonderful weekend Word here is that its supposed to be a sunny one. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Happy PPF
Great sketching and painting!
ReplyDeleteSmiles, Saskia :)
So beautiful! I saw the sketch and thought that was wonderful. Then I scrolled down and saw those fantastic colors that made the sketch leap up with life. Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredibly cool image - a yacht in a "sea" of grass. I've never been good at drawing boats, either, so good on you for first drawing it and then painting it. It looks fantastic both ways!
ReplyDeleteJez this is gorgeous...wow impressive work! It would make a terrific fathers day and man Birthday card!! I hope you frame this one!!
