I drew the sketch below this morning from a photograph I took many years ago on a holiday in Sussex. Dev and I were walking along the country lanes when we saw this yacht marooned in the middle of a field, well away from a river or the sea.

I've never been successful at drawing boats in the past, so this was quite a challenge for me. I decided to be brave and paint it as well, though the line drawings are really my favourites.

I was pleased with the result. The paper in the sketchbook is not good quality and of course it buckled - served me right for using that book. But I remembered a comment someone left on a previous post that ironing the back of thin paper when the painting is completely dry will flatten it. (I'm so sorry, I can't remember who, but thank you). I had to tear it out of the sketchbook, but it can be stuck back in. And the ironing tip worked.

This is so nice. The pencil drawing looked already finished to me when I first saw it! Interesting the idea of ironing the back of the paper. Good to know! :)

ReplyDeleteVery well done, Jez! I like both versions, too. I am always attracted to boats but afraid to draw or paint them. So many sticks and strings, LOL. A tip for flattening sketchbook pages without tearing them out - lightly dampen the back of the page with a soft brush and clean water, stick a piece of waxed paper there so the pages don't stick together, then close the book and stack some heavy books on top. It will flatten as it dries. Of course, you can't do it if you use both sides of the paper but if the paper is very thin you probably are working on only one side, anyway.

So beautiful! I saw the sketch and thought that was wonderful. Then I scrolled down and saw those fantastic colors that made the sketch leap up with life. Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredibly cool image - a yacht in a "sea" of grass. I've never been good at drawing boats, either, so good on you for first drawing it and then painting it. It looks fantastic both ways!
