DOODLING THE DAY AWAY 6 - ALMINA, BLING QUEEN

  
This is Almina, THE BLING QUEEN OF THE AVIANS, who enjoyed a hedonistic life of pride and pleasure as a bright young thing.  

But as with many things in life, the passing of time brought many changes ....... as you can see below.

ALMINA, BLING QUEEN OF THE AVIANS

Meet Almina, the Bling Queen, she's full of sharp angles,

Her mate buys her jewels, with long dingle-dangles,

A beak stud, some rings, and a lot of bright bangles.

Almina when young was a happy young chick,

She strutted around - all the others were sick!

But when motherhood came she began to feel blue,

Pointy wings, pointy legs ...... that means pointy eggs too!

She HATES laying eggs -

                                                 well, I think so would you!

ME AND MY FRIEND LISA GHERARDINI - COLLAGE OBSESSION

'What historical figure would you like to write to?' - that's the question on Collage Obsession this week.

So I decided to send a postcard to my friend Lisa Gherardini, who is at the moment on holiday in the south of England here.  I think she was hoping that the weather would be better than in her home country of Italy.

Lisa's been taking the opportunity while she's over here to have a little mid-life make-over, but I don't think she's quite got the hang of it yet.

Here's the reverse, with my message -

I always thought her name was MONA LISA, but apparently Mona means the equivalent of 'madam' or, I suppose in today's usage, 'Mrs'.  Good job I didn't address it to 'Mrs Mona Lisa Gherardini'

MAIL ART SEASIDE STYLE - A.P.R. CHALLENGE

    THE 'JUST-A-LITTLE-BIT-SAUCY SEASIDE POSTCARD'


Saucy seaside postcards of the past were the inspiration for this piece of mail art for the Artist's Play Room  'Mail Art' challenge. 

I wanted to create a 'little-bit-saucy' card, but with my own original twist and without the gaudy colours.  And - as this is a family friendly blog - cheeky rather than 1950s saucy.

So, I present to you three lovely ladies from the seaside town of Morecambe:

          These cheeky girls are Jill, Nancy and Sue

          They once used to dance in a saucy review.

          At Morecambe sea front they are still great high kickers

          Shamelessly flaunting their pink-lace-trimmed knickers.

          So if you should go and meet Jill, Sue or Nancy,

          Don't waste any time - pick the one that you fancy.

As Eric would say - "What do you think of it so far?"

(For overseas friends, Eric Morecambe (from Morecambe) and Ernie Wise were a much-loved comedy pair.  My favourite sketch had Eric playing a piano concerto with André Previn - referred to as Mr Preview - conducting the orchestra.  Eric played a cacophonous passage of random notes.  When Previn complained that he was playing all the wrong notes, Eric insisted "Oh no, I'm playing ALL the RIGHT notes.   But not necessarily in the right order.) 

MAIL ART POSTCARDS

I love sending and receiving postcards, and for quite a while was looking unsuccessfully for some kind of 'postcard swop' blog site in the UK.  (If you know of one, please let me know).  

Then Karen Isaacson click here for Karen  told me about Collabor-ART  http://collabor-art.blogspot.co.uk  which is great, more than just a postcard swop site.  (Wow, I've just learned how to do these links, so pleased with myself!)

And a week or so ago I received my first postcard - from Donna, a giant postcard 8.5" x 6" on thick card,  click here for Donna 

It's just about the best postcard I've received, with so much to look at on it, and I love all the different cross-hatchings.

I always appreciate and enjoy images that set a background story about the picture going in my mind, and this is a mysterious story.

And there was even plenty to read on the reverse side. 

I really liked her message to the postman on the right-hand side.  It made me think of Karen Carpenter's song 'Mr Postman' ... 'deliver the letter, the sooner the better'.  I'm sure our postie enjoyed looking at the card before he popped it into our mailbox.

And now for the one I sent - here's a little out-take:

The way the mail art postcard works is that having received a card, my postcard would be to the next person on the list, and mine was to Clare Click here for Clare.

  

I'm not a stamper, so it's just one of my red and black drawings, again at 8.5" x 6" on mount board.  The background is actually white, but the scanner was determined to render it as grey, and even Photoshop didn't help much.

The 'rules' for the mail art are that the card must be sent without a covering envelope, and I hated putting it into the post to chance getting dirty, or rained on or abducted by aliens.  But it seemed to arrive safely, so once again in life it proves that I worry too much about some things.

I often include strange creatures in my large red and black drawings.  One of my new friends in the apartments we've moved to visited our flat and saw a large red and black picture I was working on.  

He looked a bit stumped for a polite comment, and then said 'What kind of a mind do you think you have, Jez?"  

I said "Weird?", and he said with relief, "Yes, weird".

But I drew him a special one for a card last week when he had to go to hospital for a few days ..... and he loved it! 

Can't wait to sign on again for another mail art swap.
