FACE NO 12 FOR 29 FACES FEBRUARY 2014

WEDNESDAY 12 FEBRUARY - FACE NO 12

EMPORER JUSTINIAN I - Jez
Coloured Pencil
The jumping off point for Face 12 was the same as for Theodora who was Face 11 yesterday - a black and white photograph of a mosaic of Roman Emperor Justinian I, in the church of San Vitale, Ravenna.

Theodora was his consort - not sure if that meant she was his wife - and no wonder she didn't look a happy chick.  Not only did he look rather sour and a bit cruel, he had two piercings in each ear and special earrings that seem to stick out on wires, and she had to keep her ears covered up with that awful head-dress!

  3. He does look a bit grumpy, I actually rather like his earrings although feel they perhaps not be too practical for everyday wear. In fact I like his cloak ornament as well, He obviously had a strong eye for accessories and was probably less grumpy when out shopping. :)

  4. I would not want to make him angry. Great work.

  5. Great faces again this week, that Emperor doesn't look exactly friendly, does he? His poor wife. Perhaps the headdress was to cover up her her cell phone headset? Have a nice evening, Valerie

Good job, even if he doesn't deserve to be revered in one of your paintings!
